“Apollo and Diana”

A rare pair of French terracotta sculptures attributed to Jean-Joseph Vinache (Paris 1696 – 1754)
First half of the 18th century
Dimensions: H. 54 cm. (Apollo) and H. 52,5 cm. (Diana)

The present pair can be convincingly attributed to the sculptor Vinache on the basis of a monogrammed version of the Apollo now in the Musée du Louvre (inv. no. RF 3082). A seemingly unpublished bronze version of Apollo is in the Grünes Gewölbe, Dresden, where Vinache served as the court sculptor to August I, elector of Saxony.

In 1984, both terracotta figures were exhibited in the autumn exposition of the Heim Gallery in London.
